IGN has compiled a list of the best and worst strategy games of the last five years in its Cheers and Tears feature. Not surprisingly, Civ4 is one of the games on the best strategy games list. Below is what they had to say about it:
Other four games on the Cheers list include Company of Heroes, Galactic Civilizations II, Rome: Total War, and Sins of a Solar Empire. The five games on the avoid list include Big Oil, Empire Earth III, Left Behind, Stalin vs. Martians, and Stormrise.

Instead of focusing on the quantitative additions of previous sequels, Civ IV was a reinvention of the core ideas and concepts behind the game. Players start in 4000 BC with a single settler. From there they must explore the world around them, expand their empire, exploit resources and exterminate their rivals as they advance their civilization into the future. It's a huge concept and the sequel really delivers all the drama and details you'd expect. This time around though, the interface is much more streamlined and clear, combat is livelier, and culture really matters in important and intuitive ways. Best of all, the game finally includes a workable multiplayer mode that's as easy and inviting as any we've seen in a game of this scale. |
