New 7 Wonders of the World

righthttp://www.civfanatics.com/images/civ4/civ4pyramids_sm.jpg[/img]AP published an interesting article yesterday about the New 7 Wonders of the World project and why the Egyptians are not happy about it. The reason is they find it ridiculous that the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only surviving monument of the Seven Ancient Wonders, has to compete for a spot on the list.

 

For those who haven’t heard about it, the project is a proposed revision of the Seven Wonders of the World list launched in September 1999 by Swiss businessman Bernard Weber. It started with a list of 177 monuments but the list has narrowed to 21 finalists since early 2006. The organizers plan to declare the New 7 Wonders of the World on 07/07/07.

 

Many of the finalists are familiar to Civ fans. The ones that have appeared as Wonder of the World in the Civilization series are in bold:

  • Acropolis of Athens (Greece) [as Parthenon]
  • Alhambra (Spain)
  • Angkor Wat (Cambodia)
  • Chichen Itza (Mexico)
  • Christ the Redeemer (Brazil)
  • Colosseum (Italy) [appears as city improvement in Civ]
  • Easter Island Moais (Chile)
  • Eiffel Tower (France)
  • Great Wall (China)
  • Hagia Sophia (Turkey)
  • Kiyomizu Temple (Japan)
  • Kremlin and Red Square (Russia)
  • Machu Picchu (Perú)
  • Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany)
  • Petra (Jordan)
  • Pyramids of Giza (Egypt)
  • Statue of Liberty (USA)
  • Stonehenge (UK)
  • Sydney Opera House (Australia)
  • Taj Mahal (India)
  • Timbuktu (Mali) [as University of Sankore]
Personally I don't think the Egyptians need to feel threatened by it, since the Pyramids is one of those monuments that's pretty much guaranteed to be in. If it somehow fails to make it, people will no doubt question the validity of the new list. That said, it's silly that the organizers decided to keep the number at 7. The world we live in today is very different from the known world when the original list was compiled and a longer list would make more sense.
