In the article, Neilsen ranks games based on actual usage data from thousands of households, ordering each game according to its share of the “total minutes played” (TMP%) for the top 100 games. Beyond the Sword came in fourth, with people playing the game an average of 668 minutes per week and comprising 2.7% of people’s total gaming minutes. Civilization 4 placed seventh, with 332 minutes per week and 2.1%.
It is interesting to note that although World of Warcraft has by far the highest share of the total minutes played, people play it for less time per week – indicating the sheer volume of WoW players. Adding together Civ4’s two shares would place it in second, ahead of Second Life.
